Rules & Procedures

General rules :

  1. Participants should report to the Registration Counter at the designated time.  A numbered cloth will be distributed to each participant upon registration.  Participants must wear this numbered cloth on their chest at all times during the NPCW. In the event that a numbered cloth is misplaced prior to the start of the walk, an administrative fee will be levied for the issue of a replacement.
  2. Participants should follow the pre-determined routes during the NPCW. Those taking short cuts or alternative routes not authorized by the NPCW will not be eligible for consideration for the award of prizes.
  3. Participants should commence the NPCW 2010 at the specific starting time, reach the Check Points prior to the closing time of the respective Check Points, and also arrive at the Finish Point before the finishing time.
  4. Participants who fail to reach the Check Points by the closing time of the Check Points shall be disqualified to continue with the NPCW.  They may thereafter use public transportation to return to the Finish Point.
  5. All those participating as teams, must wait until their complete team has reached each Check Points prior to registering at that Check Point and proceeding further to the next Check Point.     
  6. Any participants who lose the numbered cloth during the NPCW will be disqualified.
  7. To reduce disturbance to the residents, please keep quiet in the venue before the Walk start.

Procedural flow :

  • Registration
    1. Participants should produce his/her HK Identity Card or Passport ( for overseas participants ) upon
    2. Registration at the time specified by the NPCW2010.
    3. Participants should wear the numbered cloth on his/her chest.
    4. Storage of backpacks is available at the Starting Point prior to the NPCW.
    5. Assemble at the Starting Point as directed.
  •  Arrive at the Check Points, produce the numbered cloth to the workers at the Check Points for Stamping.
  •  Arrive at the Finish Point :
    1. Report to the Finish Point counter as soon as possible.
    2. Wait for the announcement of the results

It is suggested that participants bring along with the following items :

  • Mobile phone
  • Compass
  • Map ( Countryside map on Lantau Island and outlining islands, can be purchased at the
  • Lands Department or Government Publication Centre )
  • Whistle
  • Hiking Stick
  • Hat
  • Torch/Head torch and batteries
  • Water bottle/water bag with sufficient water
  • HKID Card/Passport
  • Small amount of cash
  • First aid kid
  • Medicine for personal use
  • A minimum of 500g or 1 kg high calorie dry food
  • Wind jacket/spare clothing
  • Rain cloth/umbrella
  • Sun screen lotion and mosquito repellent
  • Radio/batteries
  • Pocket knife

Special Arrangement for Inclement Weather and in an Emergency Situation

  • Before the Registration

If tropical cyclone warning signal No.3 or above, red or black rainstorm warning, or thunderstorm warning is hoisted and any unforeseeable circumstances happened after 6 a.m. on 17 January 2010 affecting the safety of the participants, it will be at the discretion of NPCW2010 to cancel the event.

  • During the NPCW2010 Charity Walk

In inclement weather steps in during the Walk, participants should take shelter at a safe spot.  Contact the NPCW2010 at its telephone hotline of their exact location and wait for further instructions or arrangements.

Safety Measures

  1. NPCW2010 has arranged for each participant a Group Accident Insurance for a maximum amount of HK$100,000 for each accidental death or permanent total disability and $1,000 for accidental medical expenses.
  2. If a participant would like to withdraw during the Walk, he/she should approach to the nearest Check Point or inform NPCW2010 through its telephone hotline.
  3. If a participant sustains injury during the Walk
    • Under no circumstances should a team leave alone a team member unattended. In case a team has sustained bodily injury, the team should help send the injured member to the nearest Check Point for assistance.
    • If a participant is severely injured or unable to continue the Walk, he/she should call up the emergency hotline, indicate his/her exact location and wait for help.
    • Each participant should carry one to two fully charged mobile telephone(s) for emergency contact purposes.  In case of needing help, please call up the emergency hotline and clearly indicate the registration number, location, condition of the injured as well as the contacting mobile phone number to facilitate the arrival of the emergency medical team.

Preparation before the Walk

  1. For better performance, participants are advised to start the necessary training two months before the Walk.
  2. Keep jogging on a daily basis to enhance physical fitness.
  3. Sufficient sleep.
  4. Keep a balanced diet.
  5. Trim foot nails one week before the Walk to reduce the chance of nail injuries.
  6. Regular body check and check on blood pressure.
